Top 4 Ways to Travel From Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru

Travel From Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru

June 01, 2016

Kuala Lumpur is the mecca for culture and finance here in Malaysia. Johor Bahru is where all the fun's happening! There's so much to do: Legoland, Danga Bay, Hello Kitty Land, numerous fine dining restaurants, and great discount shopping opportunities at places like Johor Premium Outlets.

Here are the top 4 methods to get you from A to B when you arrive in Malaysia:

1. Flying (45 minutes)

If you need to get to Johor in a hurry, catching a 45 minute flight is your best option. This is particularly true if you're staying close to the airport in KL and would like to make a day trip to Johor to see Legoland or to do some discount name-brand shopping at Premium Outlets. Flying is the only option to get from KL to Johor if you're a serious business traveler or have limited time.

The price is heavily influenced by the travel season. The main drawback to flying is that you'll have to book a day in advance to ensure you can get on one of the limited number of flights offered. Prices range from MYR 90 to MYR 100, depending on when you're traveling.

The two most affordable airlines are AirAsia and Firefly.

2. Bus (Approximately 4.5 hours)

Getting a bus from Kuala Lumpur to JB couldn't be easier. There are so many bus lines available, each offering hourly departures. If one bus line isn't leaving at the time you'd like, there's sure to be another located nearby in KL that can accommodate your itinerary.

The pricing varies depending on the level of bus you're taking (ie., express or regular). Fares can be found for as low as MYR 10, particularly if you book in advance. Booking in advance is a smart choice if budget is a real concern. If you show up to a selected terminal and need a bus right away, chances are you'll pay a premium (up to MYR 50).

Express Bus Malaysia is highly rated, inexpensive, and offers several departure times throughout the day.

3. Rail (Approximately 6 - 7 hours)

Taking the rail is a great way to see all the sights and scenery that exists between the cultural mecca of Malaysia (aka. “The Muddy Confluence”) and Johor Bahru. Because of the frequent stops, the train actually takes a few hours longer than a bus ride, but the advantage is in the price tag.

An economy level fare runs as low as MYR 17. Prices can go as high as MYR 85 for a premiere fare with more luxury options such as sleeping quarters and other comfort features. As with flying from KL to Johor, there are only a few departure times available per day, due to the length of the trip and train availability.

4. Taxi (Minimum 5 hours)

Hiring a taxi from KL to Johor should be the last option to consider where time and budget are concerned. Also, there are many great taxi services in Malaysia, but there are also many who make their living taking advantage of tourists. The only main advantage to this mode of travel is accessibility; you'll never have trouble finding a taxi at the last minute.

Traffic and the driver's knowledge of the fastest route will play a huge factor in how fast you get there. The other problem with hiring a cab to cover this distance is the pricing itself. It's hard to find a taxi anywhere on the planet that can offer a cheap ride when the distance traveled is close to 200 miles. Typical fares vary greatly, starting around MYR 450 for discount providers and going as high as MYR 990 for a luxury taxi service.

*Always check the company's ratings on sites like Trip Advisor and others before hiring a particular taxi service.
