5 Hidden Tourist Treasures While Staying in Johor Bahru

Hidden Tourist Treasures

July 01, 2016

The tourism industry in Johor Bahru has never been as strong in the past as it is today. Our bustling capital offers everything a traveler could want including both traditional and contemporary Malaysian culture; from classic Danga Bay with its fun amusement and famous Malay dining attractions, to the many classic and modern sites dotting Jalan Wong Ah Fook in the central business district.

Modern Johor also has plenty of cross-cultural influences that have been cropping up throughout the years, such as the ever-popular Legoland, Sanrio Hello Kitty Park, and several other child-friendly tourism hotspots.

However, there's more to JB than these and the many other much-talked-about tourist attractions. Within her state limits, Johor has many hidden treasures that often get left off the travel itinerary.

Hidden tourist destinations you can find in Johor Bahru

Here's 5 that you should include in your travel plans while you're here:

1. Pulau Rawa Island in Mersing

Take a short half-hour boat ride from the port in Mersing and you'll discover one of the biggest natural gems in all of Johor. The pristine island of Pulau Rawa has the whitest and most clean sandy beaches in all of Malaysia.

There are just a few crude walkways dotting the island, which makes for much of its appeal; you won't find a sea of other tourists or locals like you will across the water.

With the bluest water covering the most amazing coral, you can have just as much fun under the water with a snorkel or scuba suit as you can while lounging on the beach soaking up the sun.

2. Zenxin Organic Park in Kluang

It's hard to find free food anywhere other than nature. Zenxin Organic Park is one of a few exceptions you'll find, and it's well worth a visit! This place is arguably the largest organic farm in Malaysia, offering visitors the option to traverse the farm on their own, or to be educated about the plant-life and farming processes by one of their friendly staff.

You can sample fresh organic produce along the way, with the option to buy more to take back to the hotel with you, on your way out at the produce market. There's also a restaurant and flower nursery located on-site that are worth stopping in to see. The flowers are spectacular to behold!

3. Firefly Valley Leisure Park in Kota Tinggi

You'll be hard-pressed to find a place in the jungles of Malaysia that are so (naturally) well lit at nighttime. Fireflies light up the forests here lining the side of the Johor river in the most magical splendor.

For an extra special treat for you, your special someone and/or the entire family, consider hopping on the Firefly Cruise; a 50-minute boat ride along the Johor where you can enjoy the fireflies with a cool river breeze cooling you off after a hot day traveling through Johor.

4. Hidden Maze Escape Room in Taman Pelangi

Hidden Maze is by far one of the most interactive destinations you can head to in Johor for an afternoon of fun. It's best to go there with at least one companion, as the entire goal, once you step inside is to use your wits and teamwork to find your way out of one or all of the 5 themed mazes inside.

There are clues scattered throughout each, which cloak the way out if you're clever enough to figure them out. Some people can spend 10 minutes inside and find their way out of a maze, other people spend hours of fun imagining themselves in the harrowing scenarios depicted. The mazes include Trick or Treat, The Lost Magical Lamp, Escape From Alcatraz, Fallen Angel and the very popular Dracula's Secret.

5. Permas Go Kart Arena in Taman Plentong

This place is one of those hidden gems that the entire family can truly enjoy. There's a go kart for kids and adults of all ages to enjoy, while racing around a 1.5km racetrack that includes 14 turns and some incredible straightaways.

Unlike similar attractions located elsewhere, Permas has everything from engine-less Gravity Racers to high-powered, super fast Superkarts for older teenagers and adults. For any member of your group that doesn't care to ride the track, a fun karaoke lounge is located on the premises for your leisure.

Time to go Have Some Fun!

From the moment you land at the ultra-modern Senai International Airport, just 30km north of Johor's city center, you'll wonder why it took you so long to get here!
